Artist: DJ Collins
DJ graduated from the University of Florida in 1997 with a B.A. in Art Education, with honors. She began her teaching career at Floral City Elementary, where she has taught elementary art for 18 years. Unfortunately, the rigors of teaching leaves her with little time or energy for creating her own work. However, for the past few years she have had the privilege of exhibiting her work at the Citrus County Art Teacher Art exhibits at the Old Courthouse Museum in downtown Inverness, Florida. This opportunity has encouraged her to begin creating her own artwork again on a regular basis. For her personal artwork she tends to specialize in mixed media sculptures while incorporating the fiber arts. Her current work focuses on using earthenware, crayon, and India ink to create mosaics. She explored this technique with her students a few years ago and fell in love with working with clay! Most of her subject matter concentrates around a nautical theme. She has a deep fascination and love of the ocean and did much scuba diving in her younger years. For her creating art is very personal and therapeutic and she can’t imagine her life without it. She feels so honored to be able to share her talents with others, especially her students.
