Summer Reading!

Kids: FIZZ, BOOM, READ!  

The library’s summer reading classes and events invite budding scientists to “Fizz, Boom, READ” and “Spark a Reaction!” Kids, tweens, and teens can learn and have fun all summer long at these free classes that feature stories, crafts, science experiments, and special presentations. 8:05 AM 5/12/2014Meet live animals, build your own robot, blast off, investigate crime scene science – and that’s just a start!

Learn more about what’s planned for a library near you! Classes are open to all children, in K – 5th grade, and every program is free. See you there!

Come to the Citrus County Library System’s Summer Reading Program where this year’s “Spark a Reaction” series will feature books, word puzzles, games, crafts, plus motivational reading incentives.

Busy Bees – Catch the buzz at the library with local bee expert and representative from the University of Florida Master Beekeepers, Melody Tayler. Learn about three types of bees and the scientific process of making honey. See bee artifacts, hear a bee story, and make a fun bee craft.

June 13th
Making Sense of Your Five Senses – Visit the library to learn about your five senses: sight, sound, taste, smell, and touch. Hear songs and participate in sensory demonstrations. Make a sensible craft.

June 20th
Wild Weather – Weather can be wild! Join us in finding out how and bring a little snow to our summer. Make some snowflakes to keep you cool.

June 27th
Animal Home Sweet Homes – Learn about animals and their special homes when the Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park visits and brings live animals to the library for an educational presentation. Listen to a story and make an awesome alligator craft.

Blast off! – Three, two, one… blast off and explore the world of rockets at the library through stories, songs, and demonstrations. Create a colorful flying rocket.

Is That Made Out of Duct Tape? – Duct tape isn’t just for household use! Use duct tape to create a beautiful and functional flower pen! Not into flowers, then how about a duct tape wallet? Can’t think of anything to make? We’ll have ideas, books, and YouTube available for inspiration and duct tape ready to go!

July 2nd
Robots – Robots dwell in both reality and science fiction. Learn about how robots help us in our everyday lives and test your knowledge of famous robots. Create a robot cell phone cover and compete in our robot building contest!

July 9th
Candy Science – You are what you eat! Join us as we discover which part of an M&M will float , compare which candy is the most acidic, and try your hand at building the best taffy boat. After, play a few rounds of Jelly Belly Uno and create your own pixie stix sand art to take home.

July 16th
In the Laboratory – Channel your inner mad scientist as we engage in several different mini experiments and tricks of the eye. Learn about different scientists and their contributions. Enjoy hands on experiments and create your own optical illusion poster!

July 23rd
Star Wars Party – There is nothing wrong with being a geek. Especially a Star Wars geek! Take a trip into the Star Wars Universe and test how well you know the famous and infamous Star Wars characters. Make your own Admiral Sackbar puppet.

The Science of Forensics - Find out the facts about Forensics. A specialist from the Citrus County Sheriff’s Office will explain how science helps solve crimes and share some fascinating facts about fingerprints.

Gross Out Science - Experience some really gross science experiments. Have you seen a naked egg? What is the science behind diapers? What girlandclouddoes a polymer feel like? How do you make polymers? Learn about gross science as you join the mad scientist for Mad Science Tuesdays.

June 17th
What a Gas! - Let’s experiment with Charles’ Law (Gases expand when heated) and see what happens when we heat different items. It will be a gas!! We can eat some of the experiments

June 24th
Science Mix - What happens when you try to mix miscible molecules? Learn how to make a lava lamp. How dense is water? These questions and more will be answered in Science Mix.

July 1st
Germs, Germs, Everywhere! - Are all germs bad for you? What is growing on your hands? Using gross science technology, learn how germs are spread from one individual to another with fun demonstrations. (No real germs are used in the demonstrations.) Watch Myth Busters to see how far sneeze droplets can travel, and the best method not to share your germs.

July 8th
Fun with Nucleation or Coke Geysers - Which soda creates the biggest geyser? Join us as we have fun experimenting with nucleation. A fizzy refreshment will be served.

July 15th
In the Laboratory – Let’s get Chemical. What chemical reactions will occur when we mix certain household chemicals? It is going to be a blast!

July 22rd
The Science of Chocolate – Do you love chocolate? What is your favorite type of chocolate? Learn about the different types of chocolate. Take a chocolate taste test, and learn what makes the perfect chocolate bar.

Spark a Change – Discover what YOU can do to “Spark a Change” in the world you live in. Join us in a think tank to develop ideas of things that you can do as an individual or as a group to change your world for the better. Create an upcycled craft.
