May 25, 2010
Mary Zavotsky, President of the Friends of the Floral City Public Library addressed the Citrus County Board of County Commissioners on May 25, 2010.
“The new Floral City Public Library celebrated its one-year anniversary on Saturday May 1, 2010. It was a very busy first year with many programs and activities, scores of new patrons, countless additions to the reading materials and an extensive outreach to the community. The community itself has responded in such a positive fashion that the library has become the true heart of the Floral City family, perceptively as well as physically."
Ms. Zavotsky also highlighted the Early Literacy Station, donated by the Friends of the Floral City Public Library and aided by a grant from Capital City Bank. "The ELS is a complete, standalone computer system with 62 (Bilingual Spanish-English) educational software packages. It is installed and ready for the public – especially parents – to come in for a test drive."
Her comments to the Board were preceeded by a photo slide-show presented by Citrus County Library System Director Flossie Benton Rogers.
With the expansion of the building and services offered, the members of the Friends of the Floral City Public Library have also grown into new roles. Selling used books continues to be a main activity of the group. Other activities now include establishing a reading program in the Floral City Elementary School, running a Books-for-Troops service, and supplying refreshments and working hands-on at Arts and Crafts events.
