Citizenship Classes

citizenship-3Do you dream of becoming an American citizen? Join us at the library for seven weeks of classes designed to teach individuals the skills they will need to pass the U.S.Naturalization exam.

Topics covered include: American history, the three branches of government, courts and the legal system, and famous Americans. The classes will also focus on speaking, reading, and writing skills.

Learners will receive sample test questions and have interview practice. Space is limited. Learners can register by calling Adult Literacy Services at (352)628-5626.

Pre-registration is encouraged to ensure seat and materials availability. Basic English skills are needed. Contact the library for assistance and more information.

Pre-GED Tutor Workshop - Make a Difference!

Make a difference and help other adults reach their personal and career goals. Attend our free hands-on workshop on how to be an effective Pre-GED tutor, instructor, or class assistant for the Library system's Pre-GED program. The training will cover various topics, such as: 2014 new GED Exams, literacy facts, classroom management techniques, learner motivation and goal setting, specific Pre-GED curricula, and multiple print and online resources. No prior teaching experience is needed. Space is limited. Patrons can register by calling Literacy Services at (352)628-5626.

Adult Literacy: Quarterly Continuing Education Meeting

Current tutors and those interested in becoming tutors are invited to Quarterly Continuing Education Meetings. At these (2.5 hour) meetings, which are held at alternating library branches, an Adult Literacy Services update is given, and new teaching content is presented. Come meet and mingle with other literacy tutors to share favorite teaching strategies, discuss learner experiences, and explore new ideas.

Adult Literacy Services: New Tutor Training

Join us for a free Tutor Training Workshop to become a new volunteer adult literacy tutor. Learn proven methods to teach reading, writing, and English speaking skills to adult learners. Specific topics include: How Adults Learn, Understanding Learning Styles, Word Recognition Strategies, Reading Comprehension, Writing Strategies, Teaching English Conversational Skills, and Creating Lesson Plans.

Feel free to bring your own lunch, since a refrigerator and microwave will be available. Or, you may purchase your lunch at a local restaurant. Light refreshments of coffee and cookies will be served.

math-boardPre-GED Math - In this instructor led class, learners will review adding, subtracting, multiplying, and dividing whole numbers and fractions, solving word problems, and understanding decimals and percent.

Pre-GED Algebra/Geometry - In this instructor led class, learners will positive studentreview algebraic concepts that include: signed numbers, solving equations, word problems, exponents, roots, and graphs. Geometric concepts covered in the class include: lines and angles, triangles and quadrangles, and circles and volume.
