November 16: Dragon Boat Festival

parks-dragonboatA Dragon Boat Race and Festival honoring our vets and wounded warriors, is coming to Citrus County. Organized by the Citrus County Parks and Recreation Department and the Citrus County Chamber of Commerce don’t miss this full day of fun and entertainment. 

There will be music, arts and crafts, a kid’s fun area, food and drinks and a great day of racing. All it takes is 21 team members, 8 of which are woman, minimum age is 14 years old. Get your department to put a team together consisting of county employees and their families. Additionally, there are teams waiting to get involved who need additional participants. So, if you are an individual who is interesting in participating but cannot recruit a full team, let us know and we will secure you a spot
This fun new event will be held at the Hernando Park and lake site on Saturday, November 16th from 9:00 AM to 4:00 PM. Boats, paddles, life vests and all necessary equipment will be provided. Just bring your team. Cost is only $25 per person for a full day of fun and activities, supporting the “Wounded Warrior Project”.

October 25 - 26, Wildlife Park Brewing Up Fun for Annual Haunted Tram Rides Event

The Friends of Homosassa Springs Wildlife Park, park staff and community groups are brewing up two evenings of fun for their annual Haunted Tram Rides event at Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park on Friday, October 25 and Saturday, October 26. Pepper Creek Trail will be transformed into a trail of haunting scenarios that will delight families. Tram rides will begin at 6:00 p.m. and run until 11:00 pm. The suggested donation for the tram ride is $5.00 for adults and $3.00 for children up to age 12.

There will also be children’s Haunted House, Halloween Costume Contest, clowns, face painting, souvenirs, refreshments and games, such as the Sorcerer’s Bouncy House, a 25-foot climbing wall, and a 15-foot dry slide.

Schrade’s Tae Kwon Do studio will be creating a special Haunted House in the Florida Room of the Visitor Center. The donation for admission to the Haunted House is $2.00.

Games will also be available with a donation of $5.00 per person for the climbing wall and $2.00 per child for the Bouncy House or 15-foot slide. Face painter Anne Adams will add to the fun. Refreshments including food, cold drinks, popcorn and other delicious goodies, and trinkets will be available.

Costume contests will start at 7:00 pm with two age groups, ages seven and under and eight and over. Awards will be given for the Most Imaginative, the Scariest and the Cutest costumes in each group. The contest for the younger group will start at 7:00 pm, to be followed by the older group.

Participating businesses and groups will be decorating locations along the Pepper Creek Trail with their own spooky setups. Guidelines and applications are available at the park office. Locations will be judged for prizes of $500 for first place, $300 for second place and $100 for third place. October 19 Bird Walk on Pepper Creek Trail

The Florida Department of Environmental Protection’s Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, in cooperation with Citrus County Audubon Society, will host the first bird walk of the season on Pepper Creek Trail on Saturday, October 19, 2013.

An experienced birder from Citrus County Audubon, will lead the walk on this trail--one of 19 birding trails in Citrus County that are part of the West Section of the Great Florida Birding and Wildlife Trail. Participants should meet at 7:45 a.m. at the entrance to the park’s Visitor Center. The bird walk will begin at 8:00 a.m. Binoculars and a field guide are recommended. Participation in the bird walk on Pepper Creek is free.

Pepper Creek Trail is approximately 3/4 mile in length and follows along the park’s tram road, connecting the Visitor Center on U.S. 19 and the West entrance on Fishbowl Drive. Participants can either walk back down the trail or wait and take the first returning boat after the park opens. There is no charge to use the Pepper Creek trail or to take the return boat trip.

Bird walks are planned for October, November, and monthly from January through April. For more information and to register, call (352) 628-5343, ext. 1002.

October 26 Movie in the Park

It’s time again for another of Citrus County Parks & Recreations Movie in the Park Events.

Mars Needs Moms

Parents don’t forget to mark your calendar for Citrus County Parks and Recreations annual Halloween Movie in the Park Event. This year’s event will be on Saturday, October 26, 2013 at Lecanto Community Park. “Mars Needs Moms” will be this year’s movie and it will be shown on a two story tall air screen. The movie will begin at dusk. There will once again be a pre carved pumpkin contest and several categories of costume contests. Pre movie festivities will begin at 6:00 p.m. and will include a bounce house, and carnival games. Free popcorn will be provided and there will also be snacks and drinks available for purchase. So bring the whole family out for this fun filled event.
