Ask Me Why I Hurt

by Randy Christensen, MD

At the time of year when most Americans are celebrating, take a few moments to consider those who may not be so very fortunate. More than 1.5 million children in this nation are now homeless. In Florida, there are 85,000 homeless students. A doctor who started a mobile clinic to help street children has written a book that gives insight into the problems these children face and the people who are dedicated to helping them.

In Ask Me Why I Hurt, Randy Christensen takes his pediatrician practice to the streets with a Winnebago RV refitted as a doctor’s office to treat homeless children and adolescents. With optimism and humor, he tends to the most vulnerable, forgotten, abused, and neglected of these children of the streets. One patient, Dr. Randy describes, is an abused teen living in a storm drain. Her story of survival and triumph when she graduates from college will fill you with hope.

Dr. Christiansen says he wrote Ask Me Why I Hurt to tell these children’s stories. He believes that anyone can make a difference. He also echoes a statement I have heard from those who help the less fortunate. You feel incredibly blessed when you help others.
