Recommended by: Adam
Abstract: This book is a letter to Coate’s son. In his letter he writes about his experiences growing up and the state of race relations today. He provides words of caution to his son and emphasizes the responsibility of being a black man in America. Uniquely, Coates does not take the side of pushing for social change and dreaming of justice, instead he suggests that his son instead struggle for wisdom. It’s a hard lesson to teach to a child, but the way Coate’s explains his view is honest and powerful.

The Big Bad Book of Bill Murray: a critical appreciation
Author: Schnakenber, Robert
Recommended by: Katherine
Abstract: So if I was to write a book about my favorite actor, singer, etc. this would be a great easy way to approach it. It is set up similar to a dictionary in alphabetical order. It has anywhere from a paragraph or a sentence for each entry. For example: You would look up Caddyshack or Los Angeles and it would have a blurb. If your looking for a traditional biography-This IS NOT IT. The writer is obviously a huge fan but he never got the chance to interview Bill or anyone really close to Bill. It's an entertaining read.

Lesser beasts : a snout-to-tail history of the humble pig
Author: Essig, Mark
Recommended by: Aaron
Abstract: Unlike other barnyard animals, which pull plows, give eggs or milk, or grow wool, a pig produces only one thing: meat. Incredibly efficient at converting almost any organic matter into nourishing, delectable protein, swine are nothing short of a gastronomic godsend—yet their flesh is banned in many cultures, and the animals themselves are maligned as filthy, lazy brutes. This book is an expansive, illuminating history of one of our most vital yet unsung food animals, Lesser Beasts turns a spotlight on the humble creature that, perhaps more than any other, has been a mainstay of civilization since its very beginnings—whether we like it or not.

Third, she was rudely attacked by a vampire, breaking all standards of social etiquette. Where to go from there? From bad to worse apparently, for Alexia accidentally kills the vampire -- and then the appalling Lord Maccon (loud, messy, gorgeous, and werewolf) is sent by Queen Victoria to investigate. With unexpected vampires appearing and expected vampires disappearing, everyone seems to believe Alexia responsible. Can she figure out what is actually happening to London's high society? Will her soulless ability to negate supernatural powers prove useful or just plain embarrassing? Finally, who is the real enemy, and do they have treacle tart? SOULLESS is the first book of the Parasol Protectorate series: a comedy of manners set in Victorian London, full of werewolves, vampires, dirigibles, and tea-drinking.

Cloud Atlas consists of six nested stories that take the reader from the remote South Pacific in the nineteenth century to a distant, post-apocalyptic future. Each tale is revealed to be a story that is read (or observed) by the main character in the next. The first five stories are interrupted at a key moment. After the sixth story, the other five stories are returned to and closed, in reverse chronological order, and each ends with the main character reading or observing the chronologically previous work in the chain. Eventually, readers end where they started, with Adam Ewing in the nineteenth century South Pacific. Each story contains a document, movie or tradition that also appears in a previous story. It shows how history not only repeats itself, but also connects to people in all time periods and places.

Book one in this mystery series, set in a small oceanside resort town on the Jersey Shore. This particular murder occurred at the boardwalk, on the tilt-a-whirl. The two main characters are John Ceepak, an honorable, by-the-book, true-blue-maybe-too-blue former military police officer. Ceepak lives by the code and compares life to Bruce Springsteen lyrics. He becomes a hero to his partner Danny, a very young rookie cop who lives by a more pedestrian moral code.

Year of wonders : a novel of the plague
Author: Brooks, Geraldine
Recommended by: Veronica Davis
Year of Wonders is a fabulously written account of life in an English village during the 1666 outbreak of the Black Plague. The vivid language and imagery are spot-on, and coupling that with Brooks' fascinating characters makes for a novel you can not put down. It truly does the job of transporting the reader into that time, for better and for worse.

Warm bodies : a novel
Author: Marion, Isaac

If you have seen the movie the book is was based upon differs in the conclusion. It still is a girl meets zombie boy love story but the zombies do not immediately all become human again at a drop of a hat. It is a long process and some other twists. So the book is a little darker. I think the book was much better than the movie.
